Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 23, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Morela (“Morela,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), an app published by Trekka, handles your information when you use the Morela iOS app. We've tried to keep this readable. If anything is unclear, email us at support@morela.app.
The short version
Your pantry data stays on your device. Morela has no accounts, no login, and no server-side database. Your pantry, saved recipes, and preferences are stored locally on your iPhone. We don't sell your data, we don't track you, and we don't use any analytics. The only time information leaves your device is the moment you generate a recipe or scan an item — and even then it's used only to complete that request, not stored.
Information stored on your device
Morela does not require an account and does not collect your name, email, or login credentials. The information you create in the app is stored locally on your device, including:
- Pantry and food items you add manually, by scanning a barcode, or with the camera (AI Vision) — item names, quantities, portions remaining, barcodes, and any scan thumbnail image.
- Saved recipes you keep for later.
- Onboarding preferences such as family size, dietary restrictions, and kid-friendly settings.
- Cooking streaks, food-waste stats, and usage counters that power the app's progress features.
Because this data lives on your device, we cannot see it, and it is not backed up to our servers (we don't have any). If you delete the app, this data is removed with it.
Camera and photos
When you use AI Vision scanning, Morela accesses your camera (with your permission) to capture an image of a product or its label. That image is used to identify the item and is sent for one-time processing to generate a result (see “How recipes and scans are processed” below). We do not use your photos for advertising, facial recognition, or any purpose unrelated to identifying food. AI Vision is optional — you can decline or revoke camera access in your device settings and still add items manually.
How recipes and scans are processed
Generating recipes and reading product labels requires AI, which runs in the cloud. When you request a recipe or scan a label, Morela sends only the information needed for that request — your pantry item names (for recipes) or the captured image (for label scanning) — to Anthropic's Claude API.
These requests pass through a secure proxy server we operate (a Cloudflare Worker) whose only job is to attach our API credentials and forward the request to Anthropic. This proxy does not store, log, or retain your requests — it's a stateless pass-through. Per Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through the Claude API is used only to process your request, is not retained by Anthropic beyond processing, and is not used to train their models.
Barcode lookups
When you scan a barcode, Morela looks up the product in Open Food Facts, a public food-product database. Only the barcode number — a public product identifier, not personal information — is sent in order to retrieve the product's name and size. No information about you is shared in this lookup.
Analytics and tracking
Morela includes no analytics or tracking software. We do not use Firebase, crash-reporting SDKs, advertising identifiers, or any third-party tracking tools. We do not build a profile of you and we do not track you across apps or websites. Our App Store privacy details reflect this.
How information is shared
We do not sell your personal data. Because your data stays on your device, there is very little to share. Information leaves your device only in these limited cases:
- Anthropic — receives your pantry item names or a scanned image solely to generate a recipe or read a label, via the stateless proxy described above.
- Open Food Facts — receives a scanned barcode number to return product details.
- Apple — handles subscription billing through the App Store. We never receive your payment card details.
- Legal requirements — we would disclose information if required by law, though in practice we hold almost no data about you.
Your rights and choices
You are in control of your data:
- Delete your data. You can remove individual pantry items and saved recipes inside the app at any time. Deleting the Morela app from your device removes all of your local data permanently. Since there is no account, there is no separate server-side data for us to delete.
- Access and edit. All of your data is visible and editable directly in the app.
- Camera permission. AI Vision scanning is optional and can be turned off in your device settings.
Children's privacy
Morela is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Because Morela stores data only on the device and has no accounts, we do not collect personal information from any user through our servers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use of Morela after an update means you accept the revised policy.
